It's almost time . Temps next week are supposed to creep up into the low 40's during the day. Time to tap the sugar trees ! :wink: :wink: 8)

Any one else make their own maple sugar ?

when I was young we tappt about 20 trees with spiles&buckets, my little brother
drove the tractor I dumpt the buckets. a lt of work, looking back now I really enjuyed It, that was 40+
years ago
my mom sold candy an syrup (redgate farm) now I tap 2trees just enough for me an the misses

one time I told my brother the trees would make more sap if you
hit them with a bat, I can still c him out there wailling on a tree
with his ballbat then peaking the bucket :D

:lol: :lol: That's funny. Last year was the first time I've actually done it myself. My grandparents used to make syrup but I was too young to really help much. We made several gallons last year, plan to make more this year.

I love tapping and making my own maple syrup. It's great fun activity when the sap starts flowing and it tastes great!

No sugar maples around here unless they're planted in someone's yard. We do have silver maples (soft maple) along the rivers and in most towns as shade trees. I've read that they can be tapped as well but the sugar content is less than a sugar maple. I've never seen anyone do it but perhaps when I'm a bit less busy, I'll have to russell up some permission. A number of these silver maples are on state land (game production areas, state parks). I bet no one would even notice someone tapping them in mid-to-late March. Maybe something to investigate for a later date.

you are right , silver and red maple sap can be used, but the sugar content is less so you need more sap to make the same amount of syrup.
