Remember that's registered gun owners so the map is only showing counties that have goody enough people to only buy new guns and register them.
As far as the government is concerned I think we have a registered 22 pistol I got my wife and her hunting rifle lol.

The two most populus counties in SD (including my own) show up on this map.

In this state, we have no gun "registration" except the federal form that a person fills out at a gun store or now at a gun show. So, that's not were this "data" is coming from.

I didn't explore the company who created this map and how they did it but I suspect it was by polling. So there's is probably the issues with what shows up and what doesn't. South Dakotans generally are open and may be more responsive to such questions where Texans may be a little more weary of telling people what kind of firearms they have. This would be reflected in this map. Also if the sampling isn't strong enough, counties may be get thrown out as not being statisically sound enough if present results .

The Cajuns in s. Louisiana may just not care who they tell that they're packing heat...

I wouldn't put a lot of faith in this map really reflecting with high accuracy who has the "most guns"...
