Dad brought home a roadkill skunk today, not the kind of Mother's Day gift my mom was expecting  I wasnt even sure we had skunks down here, but I guess there is a few after all.

Pictures arent the best since I was in a hurry to get it skinned in the 84 degree heat, and it kind of stank

Small male, about the size of a house cat

He had these like scabs on him in a few places, on one front arm and then by his ear. Should I be concerned about it? Or is it just scabs from fighting other skunks?? :|

Hide stretched out after I washed in a mix of water and vinegar in an attempt to get rid of some of the smell. I didnt have any hydrogen peroxide on hand to give it the tried and true stink removal bath. That'll have to be next time I work on the hide.

Hopefully it'll make a decent wall hanger. I gotta admit, skunks are pretty neat critters. Proud to say that I didnt even puncture the essence glands skinning it  Although some did kind of trickle out when I was tugging on the tail... :--?

I was also thinking how cool a skunk-skin cap could look pretty cool. Use black fur on the sides, then a good piece of back hide that has good stripes for the top of the cap. Now if I could only find more skunks...

Lox- I have to hand it to you, certainly have some spunk!! I don't think I'd be messing with no pepe le pew in s. FL heat. But more power to ya  I've been watching a good number of fresh road killed coon feed the crows and buzzards the past couple of weeks. I guess I get spoiled by the cold for a good part of the year when seeing something on the side of the road. I hope your tan job or whatever you're going to do with that think goes well!

Thanks PC

Swamp, if its mange, should I be concerned about handling the hide? Even after it's been in the freezer?

Could be mange, if so dispose of it. Might also be road rash since it is a roadkill skunk. Those sores look awful fresh
