Post subject:  selling porcupine quills...

A friend of mine's son shot a porky-e-pine while turkey hunting out West River SD a couple of weeks ago (we don't have them here East River). They didn't really know what to do with it so they left it. I mentioned that there was probably a market for its quills but didn't know anything about it since I've only shot one pine piggie long ago.

Checked out eBay last night using "porcupine quills" for completed auctions and got over a 1,000 hits so there's a market for the quills as a commodity and more as a finished art articles, etc. The African (south) porky pig's quills are the most sought after, I think because of their length, but there's surly a market for NA pine pig quills as well. I have no idea how many "ounces" of quills comes off of a single animal, especially larger ones but the going rate for "cleaned" NA quills appears to be about $5-6 an ounce. I found an auction where 30 ozs. of quills went for $165, 16 ozs. went for $96, and lot of these were the going rate was about $60 for 10 ozs.

So if you live in the woods where there are pine pigs, selling the quills might be an option. I know the next big one I see out west will be a test case for me...

PC the hair is worth more. Some guys here pluck the dang things and sell the hair for their time. They pay like $10-$20 for the pines. Can't figure out how it woks as I always understood it was illegal to shoot them as they were a ready food supply for a person lost in the wilderness.

Yup illegal to shoot here too, although you can find lots of them dead if you drive around busy hunting roads.

I knew there was some sort of market for quills but never tried to sell them. In PA, we actually have a porcupine season that runs from September 1 to March 31 with a season limit of 10.

Nope, this is straight from the Pennsylvania Game Commission web site.

PORCUPINES: Sept. 1–Mar. 31 (3 daily with a season limit of 10). Closed during the overlap with the regular firearms deer seasons.

They are one of the very few non protected species here in ny. Can shoot as many as you want all year long. Along with woodchucks and starlings. Never understood why they were not protected, but I think it's because they cause a lot of damage to buildings and such.

Can take porcupines here year round by just about any means you see fit to here. Also no bag or possession limit on them.

Man I wish we could do that legally. They just destroy the trees around here. Maybe someday they'll open a season. We're getting a turkey season soon

Shoot as many as you want here as long as you have a small game license.
