Friday the barrel was 1/2 empty, in 3 days, it was filled and raised 3 inches.
Checked Monday and it was empty in 3 days, raised another 3 inches and put in only 1 load. ???. I need to go back up today and work is crazy busy and my journeyman is working sick.

Nice bears pipepusher. I'm not very good judging the weight of bears, but I like that chocolate bear, I'd shoot him. Do you all have a lot of different phase bears out there ?

The barrel has been lifted 3 " on every bait trip. I am out of reach.
It really needs to be 6 " to 10" higher, then 1/2 the bears would be gone!! But on a greasy log , It is where it is this year.

As you can see, it is getting up there.

Image

But the 160 to 190 lb bear are still devouring it.
Pipe took a 30 loaf load up Wed. Morning, the barrel was empty.
Pipe took a 40 loaf load up this Am before work, the barrel was empty again. Just part way up the hill the cart broke. I felt a harder pulling... looking back I saw one wheel sticking out sideways on the ground. Sooo, It was all manual , today. 2 trips on back... then on the return, had to carry the cart out.
Pipe picked up 50 loafs today and will back up in the morning.
Yes Doc...we have all phases. mostly young.

.The bottom right is 32" off the log. Hole at 45". top at 68".
I am still a beginner , so with a short season if their back is at the bottom of the barrel.....brown is down.

This is above the approach log. They have a pretty good trail coming down this ridge now. (I could set a double long spring right on their foot print!!! .)

Just 6 days left!

A slightly different barrel design is in the works for 2014!!

No one can accuse you of shooting bear like fish in a barrel!! It has been a lot of physical work getting all this up and running. I would still concern myself that the bears would "think" of me as a movable barrel of food if I hauled it in so often! Best of luck, I am sure enjoying these lessons.

Every time I look at these pics it reminds me of when I was in the Colorado rockies elk hunting back in late 1989. That was the highlight of my life. What an experience that was and will never be forgotten. Spent 3 weeks in a tent the mountain man way. Spent 12 hrs a day on my mule. I cried when we had to leave. It was a life long dream that came true. That was the coolest thing I have ever done, period. Nothing can even come close to that for me. That was in the White River National Forest. For you guys that has never done that, you don't know what your missing. Everybody should do that at least once in there life! 8) 8) 8)

RM, that is one on my bucket list too. I am glad you made that trip. Awesome!! 8)
Swamp, I am playing dirty now. On each of the last 3 bait runs my undershirt was left at the site. One on each side of my ground blind, about 12 feet away and a bottle of anise was poured on it.
I was too busy yesterday to get a nut for the bait hauler. It is on the top of my list!!

Gotta..Go...

There are a lot of bear hunters here, but I don't know any who work as hard for a bear as you. Most won't ever kill one cause they can't drive a truck to it.

Hope you get a big one !

I was kicking myself on the way out for not leaving a doughnut on it for Swamp.

3 days left, time to sit.

Nice looking toys Pipepusher! Now did you put the trapping sign up to deter people or coyotes? :?  I too regret you did not leave a donut on the shirt...I'll bet you would get a good picture of a bear enjoying it. :--o

Post subject:  Re: Pipepusher Spring Bear 2013

One thing about my site was that an inordinate amount of bears were coming in the morning on. Pipe knew that but did not make the adjustment!

After recuperating and taking care of some business, Pipe loaded up again and headed south . The truck ran great the 2 1/2 hours trip.
Several good pics were missed because of no place to pull over.

Here we go. This is just starting up the wild St. Joe River.

A little further up.

Sorry for my silence lately. My computer took a nose dive last week and I had to take it into the shop before it Crashed!
Pipe made it back out to the new site last weekend. The barrel was 3/4 empty. That is good for the 1st week out.
5 loads were taken up to the site.

There is a turnaround 1/2 mile up the road. After turning around to head back down to the main river, Pipe held his left arm out the window and sprayed a vanilla, anise and a touch of liquid smoke on the left front tire the whole 3 miles :--D
