Post subject:  Building a bow string

As I'm gearing up for the turkey season I decided I needed to get the red string and cables off my bow and go a little more camo like. I figured I'd take a few pics to show anyone who is interested just how and endless loop bow string is made. The jig I'm using I built myself from parts I got at Lowes. Think it cost me about $30 when done

Image
Got everything ready

Image
Tie the first color string to the inside post and wrap around the to outside posts. I'm making a 16 strand string so I wrapped it 4 complete times, down two sides of the posts making 8 strands total.

Image
Once done tie off the tag end.

Image
Then repeat with the second color.

With both colors tied off, loosen the nut on the crossbar posts and rotate 90 degrees making it perpendicular to the jig. I then serve 4" in the center of the arms. Serving is thin but strong thread that is wrapped around the string material to protect it.

Image
A little closer look.

Image
Now I cut the string fibers where they were tied to the inside post and the screw the tag ends where tied too. Then I once again loosen the crossbar nut and rotate the posts back so they are once again parallel to the jig then tighten the nut back down.

Image
Then continue to serve now wrapping over the 4" I previously served, the bare material, and all tag ends forming a loop.

One end all finished up.

Image
Now I flip the string over on the jig putting the finished loop on the end with the single post and the unfinished end on the crossbar posts. Then repeat serving in the other end loop.

Image
Finished string or as in this case a finished cable.

Image
Finished set on the bow :D

Definitely not the high tech pre stretched, served under tension $75-$100 a set strings that you can buy. They will take at least 100 shots to settle in but after that my peep will stay put

Pretty sweet! How did you learn to make the jig?

http://www.texasarchery.org/Documents/D ... /ejig.html

I used to have a jig back when I was in my teens but got rid of it. A few years back I had thought about trying to make a cheap jig such as this and a quick internet search turned up pretty much what was in my head :D

Once I get a chance I need to twist up a new flemish string for the long bow. I'll some pics of that as well to post up as it is a totally different kind of process
