This ruffed grouse was standing in the middle of the road and had no intentions of moving. I had the camera and the Ruger single six ready. The camera got'em the ruger did not. They call me "Dead Eye Rick" because my aiming eye is not very accurate. No butter roasted grouse for me.

That's cool. I'd just like to see one again in the wild  They are pretty much just gone up this way.

As much as I am sorry you ain't eating it, I'm glad there is still one left for you to look at. I watched two of them grazing through the brush yesterday and when another truck came along I went to scare them away. That didn't work either as I got to within 4 feet of the one  , the other fellow stopped and said hello without seeing either bird  .

I'm not as quick with the camera as you TR, I have seen 4 partridge while up here and haven't been able to get a camera shot.

nice pic.
Tough shootin when you have to wait for the bird in the road to move off it.

Swamp, we wanna see. You have to have that camera around you neck ready to go.
It has got to be tough, I know, loaded up with traps, drags, shovels, snow shoes, ice melt and all that northern stuff.

Thus far I have to ride behind WOLF on his ATV and so I put my larger camera in my coat pocket and my cell phone is in my pants pocket and we have seen the partridge only while on the ATV. I hope to get a picture on one yet, as well as see a moose, a fisher in a trap, a lynx in a trap, an otter in a trap, and a mink in a trap. I saw a very large Canadian flying squirrl today.

They are great to hunt with a .22. Head shots only and no wasted meat. :--D

Hey Snowshoe, great to see you back! Yep, that was my intention but the grouses head is not the size of the broad side of a barn.

Rick, Kansas has tried in the past to get ruffies going again around here. One place they stocked was at a State fishing lake NE of my place about 6 miles or so. Unfortunately they never showed they made it. I would love to see one, or take one sometime. That is the one bird I have always craved to hunt and never got to. That is a really great shot, the photo that is.

Our Grouse population, at least in my area has gone up the last few years thanks to some extensive logging operations because of higher timber prices. Grouse like thick cover.

Had one on the road North of me this morning, was trying to chase it off to save it's life and what a goof. Walked up to within 5 foot of him and he peeped at me, then flew up on to a branch 5 foot high. I got within 6inch's of grabbing it :D . It's like they know when I'm hungry and when I'm a PETA member.
All our aspen patch's are getting so full of deadfall and underbrush that they are making a comeback here too. :D
