Hey guys, just wanted to see if the trapping season is similar around the great states and canada.
Where I will be in Maine the "regular open trapping season" for bobcat, coyote, fisher, fox, marten, mink, muskrat, opposum, otter, coon, red squirrel, skunk and weasel runs OCT 30 - DEC 31st. Thats only 2 months?
There is an early season for fox and yote.......Oct 16 - Oct 29....an additional 2 weeks
Early muskrat.....Oct 23 - Oct 29.....additional week
Beaver runs from Oct 16 - April 30

Is this pretty much the standard?......or are there some longer and very different seasons out there?

Thanks

Ambush- South dakota has very liberally trapping season lengths. A number of critters have no season (coyote, fox, badger, skunk, coons more than 30 feet away from a water body) but there is no reason to trap them during the warm months unless there is a need for predator control.

Our "season" mainly starts the first Sat. of Nov. mainly for water critters and generally runs into April. The first closure is for mink (and weasel) at the end of Jan. Mrat season goes into April (although we have to be off/out of their huts by mid-March) but people usually stop trapping them a little while after the ice goes out because they get so bite up from one another.

The most restrictive season we have is on Bcats. Its only held in West River SD, opens mid-Dec. and runs into Feb.(?), and the skinned out body has to be given to a state CO (they've been doing this for 30 years or more so I don't know if they're still getting data on SD bcats or is it simply a way to count legally taken cats?).

There's a few minor twists and turns but that's about it. For water critters, the open water season usually last about 2-4 weeks before freeze up (depending on the season) and then after Christmas (I like good ice) there's usually about 2 months of an ice season.

WOW!...thanks for the feedback guys. Looks like its pretty random for the seasons across the board. Kind of what I figured. You all seem to have longer seasons than we do tho for sure. I think the only limits we have for furs is on marten (25 per trapper per season). other than that.....pretty sure everything else is no limit.
thanks again for your feedback gentlemen
