Swamp,

back in the 70's they were used with great effect by my Dad and I on an oxbow lake of the Trinity River in east Texas. We had gators in this lake so we had to run them all night long to harvest the fish before the gators could get them. We had those darn water mocassins on that lake too. More than once those aggresive buggers would try to get in the boat with me.

longhair boy,

I had several when I was a kid. I could walk the dog, go around the world, and rock the baby with the best of them.

Here's what the Tx P & W have posted:

Is a “Yo-yo” a legal fishing device in Texas?

No, you cannot use a Yo-yo for taking fish from Texas public waters. See Fishing Regulations for a list of legal devices and fishing methods.

longhairboy, I am glad simple entertainment is coming back.
My mother watched me do an around the world type trick and wanted to try.
She was 4'10" so she climbed on a kitchen chair , wound up and whipped that big round (8 ball sized) yoyo thru our over sized sliding glass door. :--o
All of a sudden we had a new "house rule", no inside yoyo.

  That was part of my Old Daddy's sayings when something special was brought up, he'd say "I've been to a state fair and a yo-yo contest but I never seen nothing like that"! Good luck on your competition.

Swamp/Jeff,

that's correct - I need to learn to add more to my posts to explain my thinking. My Dad was upset by this decision to outlaw them in the late 70's. He liked to run trotlines too (for catfish) but with yo-yo's one could catch crappie fairly consistently. He was a good fish fryer and liked crappie best.

longhairboy,

good luck man. The ninja vanish is beyond me - I will have to look it up. What type yo-yo's do you have?

A common saying for combat accoutrements (there's a 5 dollar word for sure) when my #2 son went in the USMC was "high speed, low drag, combat warrior ninja gear".

LBH- Good luck on the competition!!! I tried yo-yos a few times when I was younger but never really figured them out. I also appreciate that you "new" craze is somehting you all can do without having to being glued to something electronic (there was life before "personal hand held devices"). So, when everyone else in your generation has gotten their brian hard wired (and short circuited) to look at their "device" every 30 seconds before they start having detox DTs, you yo-yo-ers may still be able to think out a problem that may last 5-10 minutes or more to solve...

I have unresponsive, responsive and off string. They are Yoyojam Revolution, Yomega Xodus And Yomega Maverick.

I know!! Some of my friends are like that with facebook and there phones. I have a phone but barely use it.

Ninja Vanish is pretty hard. I learned it in 4 days, but my friends took like 2 weeks-a month.

My teacher was actually the one who introduced it to the school lol. So they don't get taken away. :P

Just did my competition. Did pretty good.
I got 3rd in Picture Tricks
Tied for 4th in Responsive
4th in Unresponsive (Hardest tricks. Couldn't do three of them)
Tied for 5th in freestyle.
I ended up winning 4 more yoyos, some strings and other accesories.

I was pretty excited. But there were only about 7 or 8 people in the unresponsive and freestyle. then like 10+ in picture/responsive
