Over the years the boats on the missippi river in my area have gotten bigger and bigger. I have noticed that as the boats have gotten bigger the Beaver and muskrat populations have decreased to the point that there are so few I believe that they are almost nonexcistant. The only place that you may find them is on the back sides of Islands that the boat access for these large wake making boats does not pummel the shoreline. I used to get 40+ beaver in the river alone that includes the river channel mostly. Barge traffic does not seem to affect this as much as the boats racing up and down the river. on the lakes this does not really affect anything as the wind makes waves and has been for the life of the lake (lake pepin) This year I found (0) beaver on the river in the locations that the boats were able to pass .(except in areas where there was no wake) The beaver population has been decimated by the big boats . muskrats are gone from these areas of the river because of the same reason. The shore line is destroyed . I am sure that alot of these people do not realize what has happened to the river . I just wish that there was a certain speed that certain size boats had to adhear to in these areas the lakes just above a dam would be ok for any speed as the wind making waves cannot be controlled. Does any one know who I could contact to make this concearn known so I could help with the mississippi river ecosystem . I do not want a ban on big boats Just would like to see no wake for them. smaller boats don't make a big enough wake to affect them . The tourniment type fishing type boats are fine . The big Yachts that plow water I thought that they would still be fine making no wake . Saving gas and shore line habitat would benifit all. Any comments or Ideas would be appreciated.

That's a good idea. Who controls the Mississippi in your area?

I would try the army corps first then the conservation dept. second .They could establish no wake zones if they deem it necessary.

Our army corp's got a problem with a dam here they built back in the early 70's on the west side facing the riverside of the dam it has a 25 deep hole 8 foot wide with 8 foot of water standing in the bottom.they are now throwing terms around like, structural integrity, functionally compromised; not sounding good.
