Pete, we have had more rain then snow. The weather this year has been crazy. Most of the big snow has missed us. The bad part is the ice, with temps going up and down like a yoyo it will melt the snow one day then drop down into the single digits and freeze everything up. Today we got about an inch of snow. Swamp this about the extent of the pictures I took this year but I will try to dig out some of my pics from past seasons. In my neck of ILL there aren't many bobcats even if there were we can't trap them although there is bill in the house of reps. that would if passed allow bobcat and otter trapping. The way our govenor is I have my doubts he will sign it.

Is it possible that yote is half fox? or no?

Author:  illtrapper2 [ 04 Mar 2008, 22:06 ]
Post subject:

No, she is just a red yote Its kind of common around here, in fact the yote I shot ( see my post cure for cabin feavor) two weeks ago was a redish blond color also. She was shot about 10 miles from this one. It's kinda ironic that they are both female though.

IT2, is the coon on a brush drag? It is so fat it looks like it's head and tail are too small for the body! Do you ever weigh your coons and if so, what is an "average weight"? Trust me, I'd much rather have a coon for a non-target animal than a skunk or possum!!!

was that yote worth more or less compared to a regular yote?

Swamp the coon is caught in a 1.75 victor pro 4 coiled with a cable stake. the brush behind him was the backing of the set. This coon was not that old, I didn't weigh him but I'm guessing he was around 12-15 pounds. he was caught during a warm up we had in January so he has prime fur . Yes trapper boy, the red yotes do not bring as much money, I got 10 bucs for her, should have kept her and tanned the hide.

You're killing me IT2....small coon....12-15lbs! That is a LM-L down here. Don't be fooled by "stories" of how large some coons are down this way. I have trapped 100s over the years and weighed most of them....I got within a few ozs of 20 lbs ONCE! The largest I caught this season was 18lbs. The northern coons are so nice looking to me with the heavy fur and large body size. That is one reason I suggest to the trappers just starting out to check with their fur buyers or local trappers when they go to buy the proper size stretchers. They may want larger ones than I use.

Yep, you should have tanned the coyote.....$10.00 is a joke. Especially for a special catch. I have two black coyote hides in my shop that I have had for years....they were worth more to me on the wall than for what I would have receive in $$$. Plus tanning a few hides will give you something to do to extend fur season.

Swamp, there are some + sides to why your coons aren't as big and as well fured as ours, like you don't have to deal with below zero weather and ice and snow :D . But yes the critters sure look good. Ive been kicking my self ever since I sold that yote, its even worse now as a buddy whos a taxidermist told me the other day he would nock some cash off my deer mounts if I get some critters for him! By the way I am tanning the yote I shot a couple of weeks ago I will let you know how it comes out>
